The Insanity of Valentines Day

The Insanity of Valentines Day

February 14th is just around the corner, and we all know what that means…groups of single people awkwardly looking on as couples display just how much money they have to spend on heart-shaped chocolate and giant teddy bears.  Everywhere you look are red and pink hearts shouting in various shades of glitter “Be mine,” “I love you,” and “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

For the weeks leading up to the holiday, we are bombarded with card and chocolate commercials stating the social importance of being in love.  Valentine’s Day is nothing more than a holiday invented by Hallmark and Hershey’s in order to create the notion of perceived affection.  Wake up people!  Who cares if he “hearts” you or if she knows how to fit your name into “roses are red, violets are blue.”

Really, the only reason we spend hours hanging pink and red streamers and taping plastic hearts to windows is that we are too insecure to admit to being alone.  People around the world agonize for weeks on how or who to ask to be their Valentine for the sole purpose of receiving a 99 cent box of gamble chocolates and someone to hold hands with.

We should ask ourselves, would St. Valentine be proud?  The anniversary of his execution is being portrayed by a naked baby with a bow and arrow.  I’m pretty sure that no one, no matter how in love, should attempt to connect the martyr of a mysterious saint with stuffed animals and Cupid.

So, whether you are single or one of those “lucky” people with a date on Valentine’s Day, just remember that you are actively participating in the celebration and encouragement of finding fake love with heart-shaped tums during the commemoration of a beheaded saint represented by an exposed baby archer.  Happy Valentine’s Day!
