A Helping Hand

This past week some East High students participated in the bowing to help raise awareness for the Backpack Program.  The event was held at Madsen’s Bowling and Billiards right after school on February 21, where students bowled for prizes and learned more about the BackPack Program and it’s mission.  Student’s were also eligible for prizes like a bundlet once a month for a year!  The fun filled event included its’ organizer Mrs. Dugdale, some of the security guards like Ryan and Mr. Perales, and, of course, students.  Alongside bowling with a bit of friendly competition information was shared like the date of the 10th annual BackPack Extra Mile Walk which is April 29, and how individuals can help volunteer and participate in the walk.

The BackPack Program strives to lend a helping hand to students and their families that might need a little extra help providing food for their family that weekend. “The Food Bank BackPack Program began during the 2004-05 school year at Clinton Elementary School, sending home food-filled backpacks on Friday afternoons with 50 kids. “The program quickly took off and now is serving hundreds of students.” According to the Lincoln Food Bank’s page for the backpack program.  Besides donating your time by volunteering at the upcoming event, you can also sponsor a child:$250 for an entire year, $125 for one school semester, $29 for a month, or $7.35 for a week.  Additionally, you can purchase a gender-neutral backpack(big enough to fit a cereal box) or/and donate non-perishable foods.  You can donate these items anytime 4840 Doris Bair Circle, Monday through Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm, or at East High later in March when students will participate in donating as well.

So let’s all do a little good in these upcoming weeks and help support families in our community, every little thing helps!  Have a great weekend and Go Spartans!
