This past January, Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, became the President of the United States of America. One of the first duties of a new president is to build and choose their cabinet members. The term goes all the way back to the 17th-century usage for a private room where advisors would meet, which would later turn into a council of advisors. There are fifteen cabinet positions that the president-elect has the opportunity to fill. Each member appointed, must be confirmed by a majority vote (51 votes) of the Senate. The President can fire any member at any time, and when a new President takes office the current Cabinet is to resign.
Lincoln East High senior, Max Curry, thinks that, overall, President Trump is doing what he has promised. After hearing who was appointed for each of the cabinet spots, Curry says that,
“All of them [cabinet members] have all the credentials necessary to defectively serve the country.”
He also thinks that of the members that have been nominated, Jeff Sessions and Rex Tillerson are strong picks, because they have great character and will pursue Trump’s agenda in the right direction. Curry also thinks that the appointed cabinet members are treated unfairly by the democrats in the Senate, because of how much their hearings were delayed. He says by this time in Obama’s presidency all of his cabinet members were approved.
“I feel like the obstruction is on purpose to try to delegitimize Trump, but I think the people in the cabinet will do a good job of serving the country,” Curry said.
