On Monday, April 3rd the annual Heartland Athletic Conference (HAC) tournament began for both Lincoln East Girls Soccer (L.E.G.S) as well as the Spartan boys. L.E.G.S opened the tournament with a matchup against Lincoln Northstar. The Spartans won 5-0 and advanced to play Lincoln Southwest in the next round thanks to goals from Kisa Omerovic, Maggie Wilson, Josie Arduser (2), and McKenna Volquardsen. The semi final round was an intense match between the Spartans and Silverhawks, Maddie Krueger broke the tie and scored before halftime to make it 1-0. The Silverhawks proved to much in the second half and came back to defeat L.E.G.S 3-1.

Captain Maggie Wilson shared her thoughts after the game, “We just need to focus on the next game and come back stronger when we play them(LSW) later this year.” The Spartans went on to finish in 3rd place following their match against Lincoln Northeast which ended with an 8-2 score line. Spartan goal scorers include; Kisa Omerovic, Ashley Hyde, McKenna Volquardsen, Reagan Ostrander, Josie Arduser (2), and Joanna Shaw(2).

The Men’s Soccer team went into the tournament ranked as the 2 seed and matched up against the 7th seed, Lincoln High. The game was well contested throughout, however just after halftime leading goal scorer, Johnny Hansen found the net to give the Spartans the lead. The Spartans held on to win 1-0 an advance to play Lincoln Southwest. The game remained scoreless through regulation and ultimately advanced to a penalty shootout. The Silverhawks goalkeeper came up big, saving the first 3 penalty kicks, ultimately it was to much for the Spartans to over come, knocking them into the consolation match.

On the other side of the bracket Northstar was upset by Grand Island in a penalty shootout. The third place match was set to be the 1 seed, Lincoln Northstar vs the 2 seed, Lincoln East. The game was scrappy from the start having two highly competitive teams with hopes of state tournament play for later in the season. Lincoln East scored first with a header from Tyler Hoham. Northstar answered back with 2 quick goals to take the lead before halftime 2-1. With 12 minutes left Eli Brown found the net hoping to extend the game to overtime. As overtime seemed likely Northstar went on a counter attack and scored the game sealing goal to make the final score 3-2.

Senior and captain, James Kettlehake commented, “Close games are tough but we play Southwest and Northstar again and will come back determined. Now we need to prepare for Pius on Monday.” The Spartans defeated Pius on their home turf 3-2 in overtime, goals were scored by Eli Brown and Ben Luci, (2) who scored the winner in overtime. The Spartans will play Southwest this Saturday, April 14th and Northstar on April 26th as the final regular season game.
