Spartans shutout by Bearcats in home opener

Spartans+shutout+by+Bearcats+in+home+opener

It was a long night for the Lincoln East Spartans as they battled #9 Kearney on Seacrest Field, on Thursday, August 31.

The Spartans couldn’t get anything going on offense, being shut out 17-0. Was it just Kearney’s sturdy defense or was it a Spartan offense that sputtered out?

Kearney held East to just 168 total yards for the game. Contributing to the Spartans scoreless night was the loss of starting senior quarterback Jaden Roe, as he left the game in the first quarter due to a shoulder injury. The Spartans were then forced to put in junior QB Devin Beckner.

Mistakes for the Spartans made it difficult to get any momentum going during the game. East gave up two fumbles, an interception, and a shanked punt from the Spartans own endzone that gave Kearney field position inside the redzone, which led to a score by Bearcat senior running back Matt Stute.

The Spartans need to look past the loss and find a new way to regain their confidence and momentum against a very good Lincoln Southeast team, on Friday, September 8 at Seacrest Field.
