Islanders strong second half prevail over Spartans

Lincoln East started off by throwing an interception on their first drive of the game, and that seemed to be an omen for the night for the Spartans as the Islanders added two defensive touchdowns later in the game.

The Spartans held tough in the first half. A 49 yard touchdown drive from junior QB Devin Beckner cut their deficit to only 10-7.

An interception by Jared Watermeier led to Lincoln East’s kicker Michael Gaer to hit a 35 yard field goal to tie the game going into halftime 10-10.

Overall East’s defense has been impressive so far this season. Only letting up 19 PPG to opposing offenses. Take out the two interceptions returned for touchdowns and they only gave up 27 points to the Islanders.

A stuttering Spartan offense is what is holding this team back from victory. Only scoring 23 points in their past three games.

But it was all Grand Island in the second half which opened up with a 24 yard field goal.

And the Islanders never looked back lighting up the scoreboard on offense and defense.

Scoring 21 fourth-quarter points, cruising to a 41-17 victory.

The Spartans are looking forward to playing Lincoln Northeast for their homecoming game on September 21 under Thursday night lights.
