Lincoln’s Feeling the Bern

Lincolns Feeling the Bern

Lincoln, often snubbed an inconsequential rung on a politician’s ladder to power, has finally grabbed the attention of a rising democratic presidential candidate: Bernie Sanders. Sanders, the outspoken, bold senator from Vermont, won four states in the recent Super Tuesday, a close second to Secretary Clinton’s leading seven.

Sanders came to Lincoln on Thursday for a rally, the first visit from a presidential candidate or president in years. Nebraska occasionally  enjoys five minutes of fame (or six minutes and 22 seconds thanks to Lady Gaga’s “You and I”) but, usually, it’s Lincoln’s corny persona that wilts in comparison to Omaha’s sparkling lights and robust crime scene. In short, a visit from Bernie Sanders caused quite an uproar in the capitol city.

The Lied Center was strapped with 2,500 Sanders supporters, not including the 1,500 in the overflow crowd outside. Sanders said it best in remarking that “Maybe Nebraska is not quite so conservative as I’ve been told.”

The enthusiasm for Sanders’s political revolution rocked the downtown area this Thursday and Sanders hoped the enthusiasm will continue until caucus on Saturday. As he trails Hillary Clinton in seeking the Democratic nomination and the presidency, Nebraska just might be willing to feel the Bern.
