What Goes Around Comes Back Around

What+Goes+Around+Comes+Back+Around

Chokers, Clueless, and crop tops.  The Backstreet Boys vs NSYNC.  East Coast vs West Coast.  Biggie vs Tupac.  Love it or hate it, the 90s are back and in full swing.  Nostalgia has overwhelmed the millennial age, and has inspired artists, designers, and producers to use past styles with a modern twist.

Veteran VH1 producers Karla Hidalgo and Christopher Martin have even brought back the hit show “I Love the 90s.”  The show reminisces on hit tv, movies, music, and fashion that defined pop culture during the 90s era.  Not only does the resurgence of the 90s not surprise Hidalgo, she expects the same thing to happen with the 2000s and so forth.

“Pop culture is cyclical,” explains Hidalgo, “so within every 15 or 20 years, everything comes back.”

Popular 90s fashion was seen not only on the runways, but on tv shows and music videos as well.  Rachel Green, a character on the hit show Friends, redefined the long bob and posed as a style icon throughout the 90s and early 2000s.  Today, her signature mini skirt and crop top combo turns heads on the runway.  The infamous choker worn by celebrities like Gwen Stefani and Drew Barrymore is now worn by everyone from the Kardashians to Rihanna.  The clash between street style grunge and minimalistic pieces has been seen all over New York fashion week by designers like Wes Gordon and Alexander Wang.  But if all of these trends don’t fit your style, don’t worry: they’ll be gone soon enough.

As Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.”
