A Future of Change

A+Future+of+Change

East’s own group of “go-getter environmentalists” is set out to do one thing: make Earth a better place to live. As global warming continues to worsen, and more landfills are reaching their limits, it’s important to solve these issues before they get too large to handle.

Eco Club meets in room 025 every Wednesday after school, where they discuss (and act upon) plans to help encourage more eco-friendly actions here at East. Everyone has their own reason for joining, whether it’s simply “the Earth”, or “to make a change in the school and community.” Others have joined to help promote their personal sustainability, while encouraging others to do so. Whether they enjoy knowing that they can contribute to East’s sustainability, or the prevalence of awareness amongst members of the club, Eco Club provides a fun and productive environment for those looking to preserve our Earth.

Eco Club would like to make East a more sustainable school. They spread awareness through posters, with statistics and encouragement to improve personal sustainability. Recently, Eco Club has attempted to bring composting to East’s cafeteria. According to Lincoln Public School’s composting page, schools that compost are seeing an average a majority of their waste being diverted from landfills. Currently, the central sustainability coordinators at Lincoln Public Schools have predicted composting will be seen in East’s cafeteria during the the 2017–2018 school year.

However, Eco Club aims to go beyond the school setting. Eco Club is looking forward to working with RecycleLincoln. They’re planning on aiding RecycleLincoln’s efforts to get a recycling ordinance on the May ballot in Nebraska. This ordinance would ban paper products from landfills, and greatly increase Lincoln’s recycling rate. Eco Club is looking to help RecycleLincoln meet the required amount of signatures by February in order to see this on the May ballot. This is just one of many ways Eco Club looks forward to improving Lincoln in the coming years.

Whether you view them as tree huggers, nature lovers, or hippies, this group is set out to change the way we interact with the environment. Think twice before tossing your recyclable into the trashcan, and watch out for the innovative improvements by Eco Club.
