On Monday, February 13th, the University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team reached their 100th win after defeating No. 6 South Carolina on their home court, in front of a sellout crowd.

Hall of fame coach, Geno Auriemma, coached his Huskies to get the win over South Carolina by eleven points, with an ending score of 66-55.  The game was close in the first half, until UConn pulled away at during the second half with strong defense and rebounding.  South Carolina shut down Katie Lou Samuelson, UConn’s leading scorer, to only 10 points, but junior Gabby Williams scored 26 points, a career high; had 14 rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.

Connecticut has gone 818 days without losing.  The last time they lost a basketball game, was in 2014 when No. 6 Stanford beat the Huskies in overtime at Stanford.

Many other basketball teams have had long win streaks, for instance, Wayland Baptist University, back in the AAU days, won 131 games straight in the 1950s.  Now, in the NCAA, UCLA coach, John Wooden, lead his legendary men’s basketball team to 88 wins in a row.  Nobody has achieved anything like the Huskies have done in the NCAA.

UConn’s two out of four consecutive national championships are included in this win streak.  Only two games were won with a margin of fewer than ten points.

Coach Auriemma makes sure he has the most difficult non-conference schedule in the country.  The Huskies played No. 2 Maryland, No. 4 Florida State, and No. 7 Notre Dame all while being on the road.
Coach Auriemma and the Huskies reached a milestone no other women or men’s NCAA basketball teams have even been close to reaching, now they just need to keep it up.
