Metal Slide Mayhem

Metal+Slide+Mayhem

With school off for Presidents’ day, many families took advantage of the warm weather by spending time at local parks. When my siblings and I arrived at Bethany Park, we immediately noticed some changes to the play-set equipment. The metal slide was removed. Despite the pleasant weather recently, this was the first time we’d gone to the park so we wondered when and why the equipment was altered. Apparently the metal removal is a national phenomenon, affecting many places outside of Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Lincoln Parks and Recreation district has three of these metal glide slides, along with eight or nine on LPS playgrounds, and they’re all set for removal, if not already gone. But why? In early December 2016, the national supplier of park equipment, Playworld Systems Inc, has recalled over one thousand stainless steel slides after two children had lost their fingers while playing on these slides because the slides’ welding was cracked and broken, leaving a sharp edge at the top. Local officials said all these slides in Lincoln have passed weekly inspection but are being removed and replaced by matching plastic slides, just in case.
