Texting and Driving?

Texting and Driving?

Texting and driving is an already taboo subject, yet so many people do it.  Whether young or old,it seems that we just can’t put down our phones.  States all around the nation have already made texting and driving a primary offense, though currently Nebraska only has it listed as a secondary offense.  A secondary offense in this case means that to be pulled over and actually given a ticket then the offender must have made a primary offense, such as missing a stop sign or speeding.

State senator Rick Kolowski of Omaha has proposed a bill to upgrade texting and driving to a primary offense.  This bill would allow police officers to ticket any driver who is texting while driving.

Kolowski’s justification for such a bill comes from the ever increasing fatalities due to distracted drivers.  Statistics have shown at least one third of the drivers on the road admit to texting while driving.

Yet there are opponents of the bill such as Spike Eickholt, who proposed the bill would give too much power to police officers.  He cited that the bill would allow any form of a driver using their phone to be at jeopardy including using an app for directions.

No immediate action has been taken on the bill, yet it still stands to be determined whether or not the bill will go through.
