Fifth Wave

Fifth Wave

The Fifth Wave is a dystopian book set in the near future, where there have been five waves of alien attacks on earth wiping out nearly everyone.  The book follows the path of Cassie, a young girl who has lost everything in the attacks, and her fight to find her brother.  This book has now hit the big screen, exciting young readers everywhere.  As in most book to movie transitions there are several key things lost from the book, these are our top 3 things that I think should stay in the script.

  1. Sarcasm: The main character of the book is a snarky quick-witted cynic who was always able to lighten a tense atmosphere while keeping the drama up, many fans are afraid of Cassie losing her sense of sarcasm in the movie.
  2. Narration of thoughts:  It’s hard to present written thoughts and feelings in silent motion and I think that it’s not always necessary.  The characters have many short talks with themselves in their heads and I hope that these will be spoken and not ignored in the movie.
  3. Graphic content:  I know what you’re thinking, “Why would they want a gory movie?!”  In the book we see a death camp reminiscent of the Holocaust, which is used to drive the plot of the characters realization of the true horror of humanity.  The graphic scenes described would do well in driving the plot and could help the viewer empathize with those oppressed.  If these scenes would be too tightly censored they would lose their value and belittle the point made by the author.
