Contaminated Water?

Contaminated+Water%3F

Have you ever stopped and inspected your drinking water?  Probably not. Most people simply grab a cup and drink from the tap. However recent events in Flint, Michigan, are causing some of us to take a double look at our tap water.  Magazines and news shows have shown some people of Flint plastering the headlines; expressing outrage from ‘contaminated’ water.

In 2011, while trying to cut costs and in a financial state of emergency, financial managers for the state were told to come up with a plan to cut costs. The goal was to stop paying Detroit for the water from Lake Huron and use Flint’s River instead. April 2014 the state begins using the Flint River for drinking water. Many complaints begin to emerge as early as May of 2014, of dirty smelling and bad tasting water. When strange occurrences of illness occurred in children and older folks, they were found to have one thing in common: higher levels of lead in their systems.

February of 2015 the EPA(Environmental Protection Agency) and DEQ(Department of Environmental Equality) publicly spoke of high levels of lead in the Flint River. Many began to connect the dots that the water they had been drinking was contaminated. The Department of Health and Human Services announced the lead problem and government officials of Flint finally told people not to drink the tap water.  While plans to reconnect their water supply to Lake Huron and an addition 80 million dollars has been given from the government, the damage has already been done.
