Injury on the Court

During Sunday’s basketball game between Nebraska and Rutgers, Cornhusker co-captain Shavon Shields was injured.

With only 9 minutes remaining in the game and the Cornhuskers with a 87-63 victory, Shields attempted to block a shot from the Scarlet Knights’ forward D.J. Foreman. Foreman had pumped faked and Shields had jumped into the air to block. The end result was Shields coming down on top of Foreman’s back, rolling over him, and landing hard on his upper back and head.

Shields was knocked out and remained so for a long time. Luckily, when he eventually came to, Shields told his coach and medical personnel that he could feel all his extremities.

Shields was rushed to an area hospital in Lincoln and underwent a CT scan and was diagnosed with a concussion. Shields was later released, and he will have to follow the team’s concussion protocol before returning to practices and games.

It remained uncertain Saturday afternoon how long Shields might be out of the lineup. Shields is the team’s second leading scorer, rebounder, and leads the Cornhuskers in assists. Whatever the outcome, we’ll all be hoping for his safe and fast recovery, before he returns to the court.
