Whether you like him or not, it is undeniable that presidential candidate and former Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ popularity among young voters is massive.
The self-dubbed Democratic Socialist made a quickly-scheduled visit to the Lied Center on Thursday March third. Supporters (many of whom were high school or college students) waited outside while event organizers spread information on the caucus on Saturday sold “Feel the Bern” t-shirts, pins and hats was scheduled to speak at 12:30pm, but some started lining up as early as 5am.
The line to see the candidate eventually stretched to over a mile long, and many were still left standing outside when the 2600-seat arena was full, but Sanders quickly came outside to give a short speech to the overflow crowd. This display gained enormous attention on social media, some even dubbing it “a rally so big it needed another rally”.
With the caucus right around the corner, Sanders’ appearance was a strategic hit, drawing a diverse crowd of potential voters congruent to the numbers he has reaped on earlier stops of his tour.
