Banned Books Week

Banned+Books+Week

Every year, the third week of September is nationally dedicated to recognizing and supporting the freedom of expressing ideas. This year’s theme is diversity, which is often limited by banning books. Although “diversity” isn’t given as a reason for challenging a book, the most frequently challenged books often tell a narrative outside of the norm. Many challenged books often address sexuality, people of color, ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities, gender diversity, and people with diversities. Examining life outside the standard viewpoints can be important for understanding others, making these books important. Even when topics are uncomfortable to discuss, they remain prevalent in society, making it important to address them.

Here at East, our library embraces the expression of different viewpoints. From September 25th to October 1st, the library will be the host a fantastic Banned Books display. The display is interactive, encouraging student and teachers to film testimonials and experiences with banned books in front of the large green screen in the library. Banned Books week is about letting numerous outlooks be heard, even when conveying unorthodox views. Go into the library before school, during lunch, after school, or during school (with teacher permission, of course). Express the impact a banned book has had on you on video, and let your voice be heard. Simply request to take the video, and let your voice be heard. Banned Books are all about defying the usual rhetoric.

Banned Books week acknowledges the need to discuss intellectual freedom and censorship. The debate about censorship has been around for a long time, and both sides continue to argue. Where do we draw the line? Should all books be accepted onto the shelves of libraries? Here at East, the librarians are generally open to all types of books. Some books are kept behind the desk and have to be requested, to ensure books that handle more mature topics get into the appropriate hands.

Head to the library today! Film a testimonial or look at the display!
