Rebuilding Haiti

Rebuilding+Haiti

Earlier this month a devastating hurricane ripped through parts of the United States all the way from Florida to Virginia. While there was a lot of damage done to the United States, perhaps the most damage was done to the island nation of Haiti. When Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti it was a Category 4 storm, and while that might not seem like a very large number, in terms of the hurricane scale, it causes significant damage. The winds were reported to be more than 145 mph at times. The storm plowed through Haiti on October 4th leaving thousands homeless and over a thousand people dead. According to NASA,  the damage from the storm is so great it can be seen from space. The before and after pictures taken just 2 weeks apart are astoundingly different. Much of the area that used to be green now appear dirty and brown from the satellite. The area of Les Cayes, Haiti was hit especially hard. Over 90% of those buildings were either completely destroyed or close to it. Crops were washed away leaving the people who survived with next to nothing to eat. The worst part about this storm is that Haiti was already recovering from a catastrophic earthquake when they were hit with Matthew. In 2010 the earthquake hit, and now this, just 6 years later they were destroyed yet again. It has been difficult for response teams to help Haiti because all the damage makes it very hard to navigate and get places around the island. But, Haiti is strong and they are already starting the process of rebuilding what they lost.
