On Sunday November 6, the Lincoln Civic Orchestra performed a concert titled Russian Masterworks at the O’Donnell auditorium at the Rogers Center for Fine Arts at Wesleyan. This symphonic orchestra is primarily comprised of volunteer musicians alongside Wesleyan music students. In the concert program, the players are described as the finest amateur musicians in the community which only means that about 10% of the members have a career in music. The orchestra is diverse with people in all types of industries such as science, accounting, and nursing. This ensemble is full of all kinds of people. In fact, four Spartans who graduated last year are playing in the orchestra. In the violin section, there’s Kellyn Vuchetich and Rhianna Becker. For the lower voices, there is Logan Rezac on cello and Noah Miller on bass.
The concert consisted of an energetic Overture To Ruslan and Ludmila by Mikhail Glinka- the Father of Russian music, In the Steppes of Central Asia Alexander Borodin, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s first symphony. The countless hours of rehearsal on Thursday evenings resulted in an amazing hour long concert that left the audience awestruck.
Among the crowd was East sophomore Pierce Yates. He declared that the show was fantastic by saying, “I really enjoyed the show. It was extremely satisfying, like biting into a warm chocolate croissant. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic contrast between the incredibly intense first and the slower, smoother second movements of the last piece.”
Yates plans to attend the next two concerts the Lincoln Civic Orchestra will be holding during the rest of the school year. The February concert will have a British theme while the April production will be as equally invigorating, being titled Games and Thrones. This is a phenomenal group and you should check them out whenever you get the chance!
