Spartan Wrestling Preview
The Lincoln East varsity wrestling team looks to return to state competition this season. Last year’s team qualified 13 of 14 wrestlers to state competition. Sophomore Maxx Mayfield advanced to the state final before losing to Joey Harrison of Omaha Burke in a major decision. East fought through adversity, often competing against higher ranked opponents, and made a resonating statement for their program through their successes. The Spartans finished 11th overall with a final score of 58.5, while Millard South won the state championship with 175.5 points.
The Spartans lose valuable senior standout Grady Greenwood. Greenwood transferred from Lincoln Southeast his junior year, and quickly found his niche as the centerpiece of the Lincoln East wrestling team. Aside from Greenwood, the Spartans return the majority of their varsity squad, loaded with senior talent and leadership. Junior AJ Muthersbaugh returns as a solid force for the Spartans, providing consistency his previous season for the Spartans, and finishing 3rd in his respective weight class. Sophomore Maxx Mayfield hopes to return to state, this time leaving as a state champion. Southeast junior transfer Chance Fry brings talent and state experience, as he holds a state title at 132 pounds.
The Spartans are coached by Keenan McCurdy and Jeff Rutledge.
