Lincoln East’s student council has put together fundraiser food nights throughout the past month to contribute to paying off student lunch debt. The first one took place on November 21st at Raising Canes. The second one was on November 28th at Slim Chickens. In order to have a percent of the proceeds go to their school, the students state that they attend East while they are purchasing their food.
This year the council decided that the proceeds would go to fighting off the raging student lunch debt at East. Lunch debt is at an all-time high this time of year, so having a fundraiser to cut the costs that students owe helps many.
“We have a whole committee that deals with specific food nights,” student council member and junior, Averie Vanmeter said. “They work on helping the outside community- like our main collaboration with Make-A-Wish Nebraska. The committee also assigns certain food nights to different goals we wish to accomplish throughout the year, like relieving the student lunch debt.”
“We chose to work with student lunch debt because we want to alleviate the stress many families get overwhelmed with while trying to provide an education,” council member and senior, Campbell Cullan said. “Everyone deserves to focus one hundred percent on learning without feeling hungry or stressed out.”
Our school’s student council works hard to make the community of East strong. The fundraisers the council organizes are creative, important, and successful. Keep an eye out for more food nights to come.
