With the recent release of the hit movie “It Ends With Us,” famous author and New York Times bestseller Colleen Hoover has recently been under fire for her explicit and insensitive books that leave a bad representation of relationships for women all over the world. You may know Hoover from #Booktok where she became an overnight sensation on the popular social media app; TikTok. Aside from that, you can come across her books in large quantities at your local library or Barnes and Noble. If you were to look a little deeper and read some of her books you may have caught on to the lack of quality writing and often shallow attempts to display heavy topics including domestic violence.
As someone who has been a victim of Hoover’s books, I can confidently say that they are bad. Not only is there an absence of depth in her writing, leaving you unsatisfied, but it glorifies and romanticizes toxic and unhealthy relationships.
“I think there are parts of the books that do touch on the subject of domestic violence that she shouldn’t be writing on, but it just depends on the person,” an anonymous Barnes & Noble employee stated.
On the other hand some people may relate to these books, as they have experienced some kind of sexual abuse and it may make them feel heard. Others think these books are quick, easy reads that are very enjoyable. In my opinion these easy reads never fully reach their potential, leaving the readers wanting more.
“I couldn’t even finish the book because it never fully grabbed my attention, it felt like she was moving on from topics every second,” sophomore at Lincoln Southwest Emmy Heinrich said.
With the release of the new movie “It Ends With Us” based on Hoover’s book starring Blake Lively, we are able to see more of this insensitive behavior. In interviews we hear Lively sounding cheerful and almost happy when asked about the movie that features topics of domestic violence that is in no means cheerful or light- It’s quite the opposite. Colleen Hoover needs to be stopped, and have a reality check. Books are meant to be knowledgeable and positively influence us, instead she brings chaos and destruction for our future as she skews our ideas of relationships.
