Laila Cardenas is a sophomore at Lincoln East High School and a part of their dance team, the Apollonaires as well as her current studio, True Dance and Company. She dances at school pep rallies, football games for East, and competitions against other dance teams.
She began dancing at two years old as a fun activity that her mother put her in and didn’t think much of it.
“Once I saw all of the older girls practicing their competition dances I knew that I wanted to be just like them,” Cardenas said. “They were my inspiration to start dancing seriously.”
When she was younger, it was easier to balance dance and school but the workload increased as she hit high school and joined the Apollonaires. Working through a new school environment and being a part of a new dance team was difficult at first but she managed to make it work after getting used to the schedules.
“I think that the balancing act is different for everybody, and you have to find what’s best for you,” Cardenas said.
“Her involvement in dance, including with the Lincoln East Apollonaires, sets her up for success in class,” Cardenas’ photography teacher, Katie Samson, said.
“Laila is a student who stands out for putting extra time and effort into her learning,” Samson said. “As she works with a team, she has developed the skills to hear from others about their needs and adjust her part in the work to meet that deficit.”
Cardenas explains that the community is the best part of being in dance and that she considers some of her team members like family. The people are encouraging and kind even if you don’t know them well.
“It is the most supportive and loving community you’ll find,” Cardenas said.
Cardenas expresses a lot of gratitude for the people in her dance life and is grateful that she chose a sport that supports her and allows for self expression. Dancing has helped her become who she is, form valuable relationships within her community, and shine in her own way on the stage and field.
