From October 2nd through October 4th, East High’s Student Council hosted a food drive, encouraging students to drop off donations for the school’s public pantry, the Spartan Village. Members reported the drive went off without a hitch, some of the donation bins overflowing at points.
Gavin Foust, a member of the Student Council, talked about the success of the campaign. “I think it’s been more successful than years prior, which is kind of shocking, but I think it definitely had to do with the advertising aspect,” Foust said. “I think we really hit the ground running with posting things and making sure that the word got out there.”
The Student Council usually does a food drive around this time of year, hopefully building a stock to last the rest of the semester. A new development is the emphasis on general snack foods, which people tend to have more to spare than simply canned goods, as is usually requested. Paired with Key Club’s recent clothing drive, the Spartan Village will be starting the year off strong.
“We had the counselors let us in the pantry, and we toured to see what they needed,” Foust said. “We knew that the Key Club was having their clothing drive, so that kind of paired with the food drive, so that they’re stocked for the rest of the year.”
The Spartan Village is available to anyone in need of food, hygiene products, clothes, and other personal goods. If you would like to stop by to shop, you can fill out a simple sign-up form using the jump code BLO4. Students can also donate when there isn’t an active drive by asking in the counseling center.
