Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Club meets on Fridays in room 148 from 3:15 to 4:00 pm after school. Christina Merten, a US History and Government and Politics teacher, is the sponsor for the 2024-2025 school year.
AAPI club is a club at East that brings awareness to a minority within the school. People with any background are welcome to join in and share their culture as that is one of the main goals of the club.
“The purpose of the club is to celebrate diversity and give people a place to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander culture,” Merten said. “They do a great job of it”.
Celebrating diversity isn’t just in the classroom, it also takes place in the community. The AAPI club recently packed their bags and unpacked them at Homes Lake for a potluck and games afterward. Everyone got to bring a dish or dessert from their culture to share. It seems like a fun and exciting event they host every year, but they also achieved their goal of sharing cultures.
Cheryl Zeng, the president of the club for the 2024-2025 school year, takes on more responsibility and is one of the officers who organizes the meetings.
“It’s nice to see everyone with and without an AAPI background come together to collaborate on activities and share their stories,” Zeng said. “We’ve developed a very understanding community“
AAPI club is very multifaceted as they also help make posters to hang around the school. AAPI club is also big on crafts, which is a creative outlet many of the members enjoy. With September coming to an end, and October being diversity month, the AAPI club wanted to help spread awareness around the school.
AAPI club is a welcoming environment for anyone looking for a community to join. The club is a great way to make new friends, and won’t leave anyone left hungry as they occasionally bring snacks from many different cultures to share on Fridays.
“If you are hungry after school on Fridays there is always AAPI,” Zeng said.
