As Spartans transition into the second quarter, sleep deprivation begins to grasp many. Late nights and early mornings become more frequent as the year progresses, leaving more and more Spartans sleepy.
According to a small survey of the Oracle staff, most enter highschool with an average of 7-8 hours of sleep per school night. As the years go by, many see a decrease in hours of sleep per school night, anywhere from one to three hours lost. All cite the growing amounts of school work as the main reason for a loss of sleep.
Personally, I started out highschool getting over eight hours of sleep every night. Each year, that number has gone down. Now, I get anywhere from 4-6 hours of sleep. From what I’ve noticed, as the number of AP classes and extracurriculars increase, so does the lack of sleep. I guess it’s not all that bad when I can use my tiredness as an excuse to get an iced latte from Scooter’s Coffee on the way to school.
A lack of sleep is one of the many burdens of the highschool experience, but it is not as much a burden when you have community. You’re not alone in your educational journey; if you feel you’re struggling, get involved!
