You look at your hands and notice how bland they are, which means it’s time to go to the nail salon. You show up and get your nails done, but when it comes time to pay the price, it is $50 for just a simple design. You’re shocked but pay it anyway and add a tip which brings your total even higher. You walk out of the nail salon happy about your nails, but not the price.
Nail prices have always been costly, but recently, getting anything more than a singular color has been way out of the price range for many high school students. This is the reason people have started to turn towards doing their own nails from home. It’s now more cost effective to buy your own nail tools to do your nails than to go to the salon.
There are many other benefits to doing your nails at home as well, especially for people who are too scared to speak up in salons about the problems with their nails. By doing nails at home, people are able to choose exactly how they want their nails to look without having to worry about taxing on extra dollars.
“I really like doing my nails at home since it is a much more affordable option,” 8th grader Myra Muffler said. “I think if you enjoy art, doing your own nails at home is a less expensive and super fun hobby to start!”
Others prefer the salons because it becomes more of a self care opportunity. If people have to stress about doing their own nails at home and worrying if they will get them done within a time frame, it just adds to their anxiety, rather than helps it. Many people feel as though getting their nails done is a time to relax and to quit worrying about the reset of life, and just focus on themself in the moment.
Sophomore Lily Muskat feels the same way, and prefers getting her nails done for many reasons including the fact that she thinks that it’s a lot easier and less complicated to go to a nail salon rather than to organize everything to do her nails at home.
“I really like getting my nails done at the salon because I feel like it is a lot more relaxing,” Muscat said. “I think my nails look a lot cuter when I get them done at a salon.”
Doing nails at home has many benefits but it does take an artistic mind with specific skills, this limits the people that are able to do their own nails and might not be the choice for everyone. But salons are an easy and simple choice for high school students who need something quick and efficient. It really depends on the person but, maybe doing nails at home is the better choice for lots of people who don’t even realize it yet.
