“Invincible” is the animated television adaptation of a popular comic book series that started in 2003 and ended in 2018. The series was written by Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. The show just finished its third season and is ongoing. Fans are raving about the newest season that just wrapped up, saying the last episode was the best one.
Season one introduces the main character Mark, Invincible, and his father, Nolan Grayson, Omni-Man, as well as Mark’s mother and friends. Mark’s father is a Viltrumite, an extremely powerful race from another planet that was sent to Earth to conquer it and make it stronger. His attempt to ‘weed out the weak’ causes great destruction with many lives lost. Nolan’s family is aware of his powers and where he came from, but not why he is on Earth, until Mark gains his powers from being half Viltrumite. The rest of the season is Mark working against his father and other villains with a group of superheroes called the Guardians of the Globe and forming closer bonds with the other members.
Season two revolves around worldbuilding and Mark improving his powers. He’s faced with the main villain, Angstrom Levey, who can open portals to alternate dimensions and the multiverse. While defeating more villains and gaining strength, he’s grappling with his transition to college and personal relationships, reminding us just how young he is while dealing with all of this.
Season three deals with the Invincible War which involves Angstrom Levey, from season two. All of the Invincibles from alternate universes, mostly evil, are working together to conquer Earth. They eventually lose to the good Invincible that we know. The next big moment and what everyone was looking forward to for the finale is the arrival of Conquest. He is the oldest, most powerful and feared Viltrumite, sent away to defeat Invincible and conquer Earth. The entire finale is their big fight where Mark’s now girlfriend, Atom Eve, who is a part of the Guardians of the Globe, fights alongside him, almost losing her life in the process. Mark defeats Conquest with her help and all is seemingly well, until the ending scene. We are left on a cliffhanger where Conquest was brought back to life and imprisoned by government organizations for information, which is insanely dangerous and could cause many problems in the future.
The finale of season three got a 9.9 on IMDB and the entirety of season three got a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The voice acting was such a great touch by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Conquest and he definitely delivered after all the anticipation. Steven Yuen also delivered an emotion-filled performance that captivated fans throughout the entire episode.
“I loved the voice acting throughout the episode, I don’t think anyone else would’ve fit Conquest,” Lincoln East sophomore Brayden Kumpula said.
During the earlier seasons, critics spoke out about the animation, complaining that it wasn’t ‘detailed enough’ or ‘lacked depth.’ The animators responded by explaining the need for budget cuts and that they scaled down the animation on less important episodes in order to save money for the finale and famous voice actors. This was proved to be true by the release of the finale with impactful and captivating animation. It was very smooth and dynamic and helped take it to the next level.
“I’ve been following “Invincible” since the first season came out and I loved the finale,” Lincoln East sophomore Tenzin Moore said. “I could see the notable difference in animation quality and was very satisfied while watching.”
“Invincible” is an incredible show overall. The seasons continue to get better. The voice acting and animation delivery was such an amazing experience and I recommend the show to anyone, even if they don’t like superheros.
