The Lincoln East Young Dems club had its first meeting on September 9, 2025, at Lincoln East High School in room 009.
During the meeting, a representative of Nebraska Young Dems gave an overview of what the organization aims to achieve, which is: engaging young people in political action, advocating for progressive issues, and electing Democratic candidates. Other goals for Nebraska Young Dems is to introduce politics to a younger generation. The club has two sponsors, Evan Heller and Kerry Florrell, which is uncommon for a club. The Young Dems club meets on Tuesdays, from 3:15 to 4:15.
“I think being politically engaged is really important,” Heller said. “Having an opportunity to talk about current events and talk about the political world is important. I get to do that every day in my classroom, but not everyone has the opportunity to have a safe space where people can voice ideas about what’s going on.”
There used to be a Young Republicans club at Lincoln East, founded in 1986, however, it recently ended due to inactivity.
After reaching out to a source that does not want to be identified, according to a teacher, posters promoting the club had been ripped down in the hallways. In today’s current political environment, there are lots of discussions occurring between both sides. The president of the Young Dems chapter for Lincoln East, Mattie Hamilton-Peavy (11), stated that the largest roadblock for starting her club was finding sponsors.
“If you look at my email chain back and forth, there’s like 50 messages,” Hamilton-Peavy said. “Finding a sponsor is hard because nobody wants their name attached to that.”
