East Varsity Softball starting strong: seniors lead the way
The Lincoln East Varsity Softball team is off to a great start, and their season is just underway. Through this point in the 2021-2022 season, they have won 19 of their 22 games. East Varsity has 9 seniors all the way to one freshman; their success has been clear and is predicted to continue. Team chemistry is undeniable, and the hard work they’ve put in has led to their success early on in the season. From winning their pool at the LPS invite (for the second year in a row) to sweeping out Southeast, Northeast, Kearney and Columbus, the Spartans are paving the way and are here to stay.
The seniors had one common goal; make it to state.
“After the LPS tournament we kinda just picked things up and now we’re on a roll,” senior Mya Zavala said.
The Spartans have since won 15 games in a row, showing their grit and inevitable work ethic. If East continues their winning streak and success, their goal of state will likely be obtained.
“We’re lucky that we have a really driven team…we’re all hard workers and all really hungry…state is a very reachable and attainable goal,” senior Kyndal Colón said.
Head coach Lance Kingery had all positive things to say about this team and their success thus far this season.
“Talent, skill, work ethic, along with commitment in the offseason. Those three things, with kids who like each other, create a recipe for success,” Kingery said.
The talent is undeniable program wide; from the 9 seniors, 6 of whom are starters, to another bright spot in the program, freshman Berkley Hattan. The freshman already has 7 home runs on the season, including a walk-off two-run home run to seal the deal against Columbus late in the 7th inning on Thursday.
“Hattan is very talented, very motivated, very committed…she’s a tough kid… if she stays healthy… she is going to leave a big mark on East high softball,” Kingery said.
East is set to take on Pius X Thursday September 23rd for senior night and Lincoln Southwest Thursday September 30th.
