Despite a good fight, Lincoln East falls short to the number two ranked team class A, Omaha Central. On Saturday January 15th, 2022, the Spartans lost 28-48 to the Eagles. Omaha Central’s height and skill was shown in dominating fashion throughout the whole game.
Spartans started the game strong with Matalyn Campbell, Ellie Bovaird, Kaylee Denker, Keatyn Musiel, and Susie Bovaird starting on the court. Omaha Central started out fierce and it wasn’t until Lillie Shaw’s layup late in the first quarter to score the first points for the Spartans, making the 1st quarter end with a score of 13-2. Omaha Central continued to score and stay ahead well into the 2nd quarter. With 2 minutes left before half time, Kaylee Denker makes a 3 pointer to make the score 22-9 at the beginning of half.
“Going into the game I knew that [Omaha] Central would be super aggressive and physical,” Denker said. “I just tried to work my hardest, especially because I was guarding somebody 5 inches taller than me.”
Matalyn Campbell fought for her team to stay caught up in the 3rd quarter getting her 3rd steal of the game with 2 minutes left. East only scored three more points in the third quarter bringing the score to 38-11 to start off the 4th quarter.
With two 3 pointers in the 4th quarter, Campbell brings the score up to 48-25 lacking enough time to catch up.
“My hopes for the rest of the season is to keep the close bond with the team,” Denker said. [We need to] continue winning those hard games, and overall do the best we can do no matter the odds of winning the game.”
