Band is looking forward to a great year with new theme

The Lincoln East Marching Band season is nearly upon us, and the band is determined to have a great year. This year’s theme is “Among the Stars,” featuring popular songs, such as “When You Wish Upon a Star,” “Rewrite the Stars,” and “Moon Dance.” Many band members think this year’s theme is very exciting and provides cool visuals and more of a theatrical performance for viewers. Having popular songs makes it easier to get up in the morning for before-school rehearsals. Samantha Gates, drum major, claims, “I wake up at 5:30 excited for [band rehearsals].”

Dedication like Samantha’s fills the field. The band got off to a slow start this year, due to bad weather, but that just makes the group even more focused. “There’s a lot of people stepping up to the leadership position and helping anyone who needs help,” says senior section leader Natalie Alexander. Motivation and effort put in by the music students is also what helps new sophomores in the varsity band feel even more at home. Two sophomores say it’s fun to be in the big group, and upperclassman make them feel very involved.

The band season officially starts in October, and the band is practicing their plumes off to get their show ready in time. Luckily, the group is up to the challenge and hopeful for what the year to come will bring. “I think we have a very cool show this year, maybe better than the last,” a color guard member says, with hope and eagerness in her eyes. The band continues their hard work before varsity football games, where they will continue performing in the halftime show. The band director is proud of the band’s progress as well, as Nicole Shively says, “They have potential to go really far.”
