Another pan of cookies thunks in the oven as the scent of freshly baked goods fills my nose. Resisting the urge to take a bite right then and there was the most challenging thing I’ve done, but I knew I would have to wait until class on Monday where I would pit the cookies against each other to see which chocolate chip cookie ended up on top.
On Saturday, October 25, I started making four different types of cookie dough: simple homemade, brown butter, gluten-free, and oats. To add more to the mix, I also used store-bought cookie dough to see how it ranked among its competitors.
While Saturday was filled with prepping the dough, Sunday, October 26 was filled with baking it. One sheet after another, the cookies were filling up the entire house with their mouthwatering aroma. After many hours working at the oven, I was finally done and had 136 cookies to show for it.
Monday, October 27, was the moment this was all leading up to. I brought the cookies to class for all of my fellow Oracle staff members to try and rank which ones were their favorites. One after another, they grabbed their cookies and bit in, savoring the flavor and trying to decide which one took their first place spot.
The results came in and were a shock to me. I had guessed that the normal homemade cookies would beat out the rest of them, but it shocked me to see that the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies were the ones to take home the trophy.

“My favorite cookie was the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie,” Social media editor of the Oracle, Oliva Muffler said. “I really liked it because of the texture of the oats and how it makes it better than just regular chocolate chip cookies.”
While the majority of students preferred the oatmeal, there were some outliers, including the Oracle Advisor whose favorite was the normal chocolate chip.

“My favorite cookie was the basic recipe,” Oracle Advisor Emily Geldmeier said. “I was struggling between that and the gluten-free cookies, because we eat a lot of gluten-free food at home since my husband is gluten-free. The consistency of the flavors stood out to me in the cookies, especially in the normal cookie, it was blended together really well, and there were no chunks of anything to ruin the flavor.”
Though everyone’s taste buds are entirely different from the person sitting next to them, one thing everyone can agree on is cookies. Whether they preferred the normal, brown butter, or oatmeal, everyone found a delicious snack with their cookies. So, as shocking as it was to realize that my classmates are grandmas, liking oatmeal cookies the best, I guess that’s just how the cookie crumbles.
