“The Housemaid”, a mystery thriller novel written by Freida McFadden, came out in 2022 and quickly became a best seller. “The Housemaid” is loved by millions of readers, and the first book in the series was a Nominee for Readers’ Favorite Mystery & Thriller (2022) and a #1 New York Times bestseller. A movie adaptation of the novel starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried hit theaters December 19, 2025 and has since received wildly mixed reviews.
“The Housemaid” is a thriller mystery that will keep you on your toes the whole way through. There are two other books in the series, as well as a short story. The film was highly anticipated within the book community, as fans waited to see if it would do the novel justice.
“The Housemaid…from director Paul Feig, the film plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems…but what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous — a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power.” Rotten Tomatoes review said. “Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.”

The casting was another aspect fans were sceptical of, especially the two main characters, Nina and Millie. Sweeney plays Millie in the film, and controversy follows her everywhere she goes. Personally, I think she did a really great job presenting Millie and looked the part as well. On the other hand, Seyfried, who played Nina, did a phenomenal job but didn’t fit the book description remotely. The novel depicts Nina as much older and someone who doesn’t take care of herself whatsoever. Despite the physical differences, Seyfried offered an outstanding performance and clearly deserved to play the role.
“I think it was a good movie with a good plot and acting,” Vanessa Peterson said. “I think some parts of the movie were predictable, but the main plot twist was gladly unexpected. I think if you’re into slight horror and gore I recommend. If not, it might not be the best. And since watching it I’ve thought about reading the books but haven’t yet.”
“The Housemaid” adaptation brings up a larger idea; movie adaptations of popular novels have a long history of disappointing readers. Fans of books often walk into theaters with high expectations, only to leave feeling like something important was missing. This pattern has repeated itself with major franchises like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Lord of the Rings, The Notebook and countless more.
Books allow readers to connect deeply with characters through their detailed thoughts and emotions, while movies must rely on visuals and dialogue alone. This often leads the movies to appear very rushed or just less impactful as a whole. Frequently, even strong acting cannot make up for the fact that films lack the inner dialogue of our beloved characters.
Ultimately. Movie adaptations can be entertaining, but they rarely match the depth of the novels they are based on. While films like these bring beloved stories to life in new ways, they often leave out pivotal elements that made readers fall in love in the first place. For many fans, this reinforces the popular conclusion: the book was better.
